When your air conditioner is running but your home still feels warm, it can be especially frustrating during a Corpus Christi summer. In many cases, the system is still operating, but something is preventing it from cooling efficiently. The cause may be simple, such as a thermostat setting or dirty air filter, or it may point to a refrigerant, airflow or mechanical issue that needs professional attention.
Before assuming there is a major problem, check that your thermostat is set to Cool and that the temperature is set below the current room temperature. It is also worth looking at the fan setting. If the fan is set to On, it may continue circulating room-temperature air even when the AC is not actively cooling. Setting it to Auto makes it easier to tell when the cooling system is actually running.
A dirty air filter can also have a noticeable effect on cooling performance. When the filter becomes clogged, airflow through the system is restricted and the AC has to work harder to move conditioned air through the home. Replacing a dirty filter is a simple first step and can sometimes resolve minor performance problems before a service call is needed.
The outdoor portion of your air conditioning system needs good airflow to release heat from inside the home. Grass, leaves, dirt and other debris around the unit can reduce its ability to operate efficiently. Corpus Christi’s coastal conditions can also be harder on outdoor HVAC equipment over time, with heat, moisture and salt in the air contributing to wear.
Keeping the area around the unit clear is helpful, but internal cleaning, electrical work and repairs should be left to a qualified technician.
If your AC is blowing warm air, freezing up, running continuously or struggling to reach the thermostat setting, there may be a refrigerant, electrical or mechanical issue. These problems usually require professional diagnosis, and continuing to run a struggling system can sometimes make the problem worse.
